Purpose of Data Set The Fort Columbia Tidal Reconnection Project is located on the inland side of HWY 101 near the town of Chinook, Washington. Historically the Ft. Columbia project site was tidal estuarine wetlands. Pre-restoration the site was freshwater wetlands that experienced extremely restricted hydrologic connection to the Lower Columbia River Estuary as a result of the construction of HWY 101. Post-restoration approximately 96 acres of tidal wetland habitat within the Chinook River watershed were restored by replacing a perched, undersized culvert, thereby reestablishing the ecological benefits of the historic tidal wetland habitat provided for endemic fish and wildlife species.
The associated data set contains fish abundance data from those species observed utilizing the newly restored habitat (Inside) as well as fish abundance data observed immediately outside the restoration site in Baker Bay.
Bi-monthly trap netting (trap netting occurred inside the restoration site) events took place in sync with seining efforts (seining occurred outside the restoration site) to compare the species assemblages present within the restoration site versus those outside the restoration site.
A PIT tag array was installed within the restoration site in 2011 as a means to gather continuous data of any PIT tagged fish utilizing the site. The array consisted of 6 antennas, each of which was strategically placed in a manner that provided an optimum detection window. Aside from king tides, the array was capable of detecting the entire tidal prism. In January of 2012 several of the antennas were damaged by large woody debris. The remaining antennas continued to operate capturing approximately 40% of the tidal prism until November of 2012 when a large Sitka Spruce fell and broke the connection to the remaining antennas.
